Winner of the Álvaro Alberto Prize 2017

Fiocruz Paraná Biologist Samuel Goldenberg has won the 2017 Admiral Álvaro Alberto Prize in the category Life Sciences. The honor is bestowed by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in partnership with the Conrado Wessel Foundation and the Brazilian Navy. Goldenberg is director of the Carlos Chagas Institute, part of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Paraná, and member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). His specialty is parasitology, particularly studies on the differentiation of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the culprit behind Chagas disease. Goldenberg holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Brasília (UnB) and a PhD from Paris Diderot University. He has been with Fiocruz since 1982 and led the establishment of its Paraná branch.
