The winners of the 2025 FCW Prize, awarded by Fundação Conrado Wessel, are biologist Mercedes Bustamante in the Science – Climate Change category and writer Marcelo Rubens Paiva in the Culture – Literature category. Each winner will receive R$400,000 at a ceremony to be held in October. Bustamante is a professor at the University of Brasília (UnB) and author of the chapter on agriculture and forests in the 6th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). She specializes in ecology and land-use change in the Cerrado (see Pesquisa FAPESP issue n° 324). Paiva is the author of the book Ainda estou aqui (I’m still here; 2015), which describes the quest of his mother—Eunice Paiva, a lawyer—for answers about her husband’s disappearance. The 2025 film based on the book, also titled I’m Still Here and directed by Walter Salles, became the first Brazilian feature film to win an Oscar, taking the prize in the Best International Feature Film category.
