Environmental preservation and energy efficiency are among the projects considered in the third edition of the Werner von Siemens Technology Innovation Prize. In the New Ideas, Student category, the winners in the Industry, Energy and Health modalities were respectively, Rafael Guedes Abreu, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, with a system for monitoring vegetation clearance, Eric Costa, from the University Center of the Inaciana Educational Foundation (FEI), with carbon nanotubes to reduce losses in power transmission, and Cláudia Karina Barbosa de Vasconcelos, from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (MG), with a device for monitoring radiation in the treatment of jaundice in the newly-born (Pesquisa FAPESP, edition 149). In the same modalities in the Science & Technology category, the prize-winners were Thais de Oliveira, from the National Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research, with recycling liquid waste in light bulb industries, Ane Cheila Rovani, Carlos Alejandro Figueira and Felipe Cemin, from the University of Caxias do Sul (RS), with an increase in power consumption efficiency in electro-mechanical devices, and Giuliano Barbieri, from the University of São Paulo, with ultra-sonometric assessment of cortical bone consolidation and density.
