In July 2016 a science communication portal dedicated to women’s participation in various areas of research was launched. Ciência & Mulher (Science and Women) is an initiative of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) that aims to publicize research, articles and books produced by women or that deal with topics such as women’s health, domestic violence and abortion. According to the institution, the goal is to boost scientific production by women and thinking on gender issues in Brazil. One of the sections of the new portal presents profiles of women researchers who are well-known in their fields, such as Brazilian astronomer Duilia de Mello, researcher at the Goddard Space Flight Center, a laboratory of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). “In addition to our own content, we also post reports published by news agencies, research institutions and universities,” says journalist Fabiola de Oliveira, portal coordinator. She expects that along with the portal there will be activities such as workshops and seminars to hold discussions on the involvement of women in Brazilian science.
