The Center for Artificial Intelligence (C4AI), an engineering research center funded by FAPESP was inaugurated on October 13 at the University of São Paulo (USP). The C4AI is the result of a partnership between the Foundation, the university, and technology company IBM. It will focus on cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence with the aim of producing solutions for Brazil in areas such as health diagnosis and treatment, improvement of the food production chain, and development of natural language processing technologies in Brazilian Portuguese. FAPESP and IBM will each invest R$2 million per year in the C4AI program for five years, while USP will invest R$4 million per year in laboratories, teachers, technicians, and employees. “The opening of this center is part of a continuous effort by the Foundation to promote research partnerships between universities and companies,” said Luiz Eugênio de Mello, scientific director of FAPESP, at the inauguration.
