Close Ties between Brazil and Argentina

012-013_Estrategias_231-02The index of collaboration between Argentina and Brazil is one of the highest in the world, and still rising. It stood at 4.94 in 1997 and reached 5.81 in 2012 (see chart), as shown in the report entitled Science and Engineering Indicators 2014, published by the National Science Foundation (NSF). According to NSF methodology, values higher than 1 indicate a greater degree of collaboration than expected, considering the profiles of the partners, while values lower than 1 reveal less active collaboration than expected. “Although cooperation between Brazil and Argentina is intense, there is plenty of room for growth,” says Marcel Knobel, assistant coordinator of research collaboration at FAPESP. “São Paulo is only two hours away by air from Buenos Aires. The degree to which science has matured in both countries, the cultural and historical ties, and the proximity between their languages show that it is possible to expand the collaboration.” The NSF report demonstrates that scientific collaboration among Latin American countries is much more dynamic than the world average. The index of collaboration between Argentina and Mexico was 3.88 in 2012, while between Brazil and the United States, the index stood at 0.96.
