Picture a driver reading the day’s news while commuting. This would happen inside the moving car, without risking a collision or veering off the road. The scene, which may seem out of science fiction, may be part of large urban centers’ reality in the upcoming 10 or 20 years thanks to the development of autonomous cars throughout the world.
For now, the efforts are still in the realm of research, especially in universities, some representatives of the automotive industry and at Google, which also maintains an experimental project. In Brazil, a common car at the University of São Paulo (USP) was the first autonomous vehicle authorized to travel in a city’s streets. Pesquisa FAPESP’s team followed closely this car’s tests.
