FAPESP

Five new RIDCs

In March, FAPESP announced five new Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Centers (RIDCs), to be funded for an initial period of five years, which may be extended for two more three-year periods. Arnaldo Colombo will head a center at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) where scientists will study the growing antimicrobial resistance of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. At the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture of the University of São Paulo (ESALQ-USP), Carlos Eduardo Cerri will be at the forefront of research on carbon in tropical agriculture. At the Hematology and Hemotherapy Center of the University of Campinas (Hemocentro-UNICAMP), Carmino Antonio de Souza, from UNICAMP’s School of Medical Sciences, will direct an RIDC in an area of theranostics that uses nanotechnology to diagnose and treat cancer. A center at the Biosciences Institute of São Paulo State University (IB-UNESP) in Rio Claro, headed by Leonor Patricia Morellato, will study the dynamics of biodiversity in the context of climate change. And at USP’s Institute of Chemistry, Shaker Chuck Farah will lead research related to the biology of bacteria and bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria). Established in 1998, the RIDC program currently funds 17 centers.
