Iron and vitamin C in drinking water may help fight child anemia, which affects half of all Brazilians up to 5 years old. The mixture was developed by Joel Lamounier, Flávio Capanema and Daniela Rocha, from the Medical School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, and is being tested in 24 crèches in Belo Horizonte. The results so far are promising. The group detected a drop of 69% in the prevalence of anemia among the 321 children examined. The indices of malnutrition and growth deficit also fell. The level of hemoglobin in the blood rose (Minas Faz Ciência).
