Antonio Carlos Robert de Moraes, full professor with the Department of Geography at the University of São Paulo School of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences (FFLCH/USP), and a native of Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, passed away in São Paulo on July 16, 2015, at the age of 61. He was chair of the geography examination committee at the Rio Branco Institute, which trains candidates for Brazil’s diplomatic service; the exam committees take part in the admission selection process. He had served as scientific advisor for FAPESP since 1986 and was a member of the Human Geography sub-area of the Area Panels Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences. He held bachelor’s degrees in geography and social sciences from the University of São Paulo and earned his master’s and doctorate in human geography from the same institute in the late 1970s. He published dozens of articles and was the author or editor of 26 books. The last of these, entitled Território na geografia de Milton Santos (Territory in the geography of Milton Santos), came out in 2014. Moraes died of complications following a liver transplant.
