Governor reappoints executive director

In a decree published in the São Paulo State Official Gazette on August 30, Governor Rodrigo Garcia appointed Carlos Américo Pacheco as chair of FAPESP’s Executive Board. Pacheco’s name was one of three put forward for consideration by the governor, alongside Guilherme Ary Plonski, from the School of Economics, Administration, Accounting, and Actuarial Science at the University of São Paulo (FEA-USP), and Carlos Frederico de Oliveira Graeff, from the School of Sciences at São Paulo State University (FC-UNESP). Pacheco has a degree in electronic engineering from the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), a master’s and PhD in economics from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), and a postdoctorate from Columbia University, USA. He is a professor of economics at UNICAMP. He was executive secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Funding Authority for Studies and Projects (FINEP) between 1999 and 2002. He was also undersecretary of the São Paulo State Economic Development Department (2007), dean of the ITA (2011–2015), and director of the Brazilian Center for Energy and Materials Research (CNPEM) from 2015 to 2016.
