In August, the first edition of the Jabuti Academic Prize, awarded by the Brazilian Book Chamber, announced 29 winners for 2023, selected from 1,953 entries. The fifth edition of Medicina ambulatorial – Condutas de atenção primária baseadas em evidências (Outpatient medicine – Evidence-based primary care practices; Artmed), by Bruce Duncan and Maria Inês Schmidt, both from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, was named Classic Academic Book 2024. In the Anthropology, Sociology, Demography, Political Science, and International Relations category, there were two winners: A torre: O cotidiano de mulheres encarceradas pela ditadura (The tower: The daily lives of women imprisoned by the dictatorship; Cia. das Letras), by journalist Luiza Villaméa, and Entre risos e perigos: Artes da resistência e ecologia quilombola no alto sertão da Bahia (Between laughter and danger: Resistance arts and quilombola ecology in the hinterlands of Bahia; 7Letras), by anthropologist Suzane de Alencar Vieira of the Federal University of Goiás. Introdução à história da filosofia: Volume 3: A patrística – Introdução ao nascimento da filosofia cristã (Introduction to the history of philosophy: Volume 3: Patristics – Introduction to the birth of Christian philosophy; Cia. das Letras), by philosopher Marilena Chaui of the University of São Paulo, won in the Philosophy and Science Communication categories. The winners each received a statuette and R$5,000. Silvia Pimentel, a jurist from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, was named academic personality of the year (see Pesquisa FAPESP issue n° 281).
