Master’s degree holders in the Amazon Region

Education is the field in which the largest number of master’s degree holders are working in the North

Brazil’s North Region has seen a 940% increase in the number of people who hold master’s degrees over a 13-year period. In all, there were 7,778 master’s degree holders between 1996 and 2009. At the time the research by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation of Amazonas State (Secti-AM) was completed, 95% of them were employed. On the national level, even though the region still ranked lowest, the number of master’s degree holders rose by 2.81% to 5.05%. The data is found in the second edition of the Cadernos de CT&I Amazonas (ST&I Journal of Amazonas), published by Secti-AM which used a methodology implemented by the Center for Strategic Studies and Management in Science, Technology and Innovation (CGEE) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) to gather the figures on degree recipients in academic and non-academic master’s degree programs.

The same study assessed the employability status of these master’s degree holders. The studies cover the states of Amazonas, with 2,012 master’s degree holders, Pará, 2,818, Tocantins, 814, Rondônia, 756, Roraima, 365, Amapá, 364, and Acre, 295. Of the 7,424 master’s degree holders with jobs during the period, the majority, or 3,021, were working formally as of the end of 2009 in the area of education. Next, 2,982 were working in public administration, defense and social security. There were 403 in scientific and technical fields, 168 in human health and social services, 152 in processing industries, 99 in financial services and insurance, 98 in mining industries, 64 in electricity and gas, 60 in agriculture, livestock, fishing and forest production and 168 in other activities and services.
