Plenary session of the 2011 STS Forum: dialogue between politicians, scientists and industryDFG

For the first time as a member, FAPESP is taking part in the 9th Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum October 7-9 in Kyoto, Japan.  The forum is a non-profit international organization that brings together scientific leaders from various countries, technology companies, research agencies and public policy makers.  The foundation will be represented by Chairman of the Executive Board, José Arana Varela.  “In 2011, a FAPESP took part in the forum, but as an invited entity,” Varela explained.  The STS has held annual meetings since 2004 for the purpose of establishing a global network to discuss the progress made in science and technology for the benefit of humankind.  Among this year’s themes are energy, nuclear safety, global health, sustainability and the role of universities in the XXI century.  One of the plenary sessions will seek to improve the dialogue between politicians, scientists and industry.  “One of the great strengths of the STS Forum is the fact that it is multi-faceted.  It brings together viewpoints of those who make scientific policy, the scientists and the companies that engage in innovation.  There are also representatives from the media and Nobel Prize winners,” adds Varela.
