São Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin has appointed Prof. Marco Antonio Zago to be the new president of the University of São Paulo (USP) and Prof. Vahan Agopyan to serve as vice president, both for four-year terms. The Zago-Agopyan slate received the highest number of votes from the electoral college, which was convened on December 19, 2013; the college comprises members of the University Board, the Central Councils and Congregations of its schools and colleges, and the Deliberative Boards of its museums and specialized institutes. The winning slate garnered 1,206 votes and topped the list of three sets of names submitted to the governor, who has the ultimate say in the decision. Zago, 66, was dean of research under the administration of Pres. João Grandino Rodas and full professor at the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine (FMRP-USP), from which he graduated. He was also clinical director of the Hospital das Clínicas and scientific director of the Hemotherapy Center, both in Ribeirão Preto. He earned his doctorate at USP and did post-doctoral work at Oxford University. As a researcher, he has made contributions to the study of sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. Since 2000, he has coordinated the Center for Cell-Based Therapy (CTC), one of the Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Centers (RIDC) funded by FAPESP. From 2007 to 2010, he chaired Brazil’s National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and established the National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCTs). He also served as one of the area coordinators of FAPESP’s Office of the Scientific Director, which is a committee of recognized experts that is responsible for coordinating the merit review of applications to the Foundation. The new vice president, Vahan Agopyan, is an engineer and a full professor at the Polytechnic School (Poli/USP) and holds a doctorate from King’s College London. He formerly directed Poli/USP and the São Paulo Institute for Technological Research (IPT). He served as chair of the Board of Trustees of the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN) and was a member of FAPESP’s Board of Trustees.
