In 2017, residents of Brazil filed 5,480 patents at the Brazilian National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI), representing a growth of 5.4% over 2016 (which had 5,199 filings). There has been a 72% increase since 2000, when 3,178 patents were filed. From 2015 to 2017, the growth was 18%.

Patent filings increase and industry shows weakness
Despite recent growth, businesses are no longer the leading source of patents in the country1. Representing 9 of the 15 leading organizations in terms of patents filed in 2000–2005, only three are on the list for 2013–2017, and only one in 2017. In a reverse of that trend, universities have gone from three on the 2000–2005 list to 11 for 2013–2017, and 16 out of the 172 leading organizations in 2017.
Whirlpool and Petrobras, two companies that featured among the leaders in the 2013–2017 period, have dropped significantly since 2014, while Vale, having peaked with 32 patents in 2015, also fell in 2016/17. Petrobras, which was the leader between 2000 and 2012 and placed third in 2014, was only 26th in 2017, with 19 patents filed, its lowest number since 2000.
