UFRJs marine pharmacy

The sea cucumbers and the tunicata – species of pointed mollusks found on the beach – contain substances that have active principles against thrombosis and coagulation. The discovery comes from a study by the Laboratory of Conjunctive Tissue, of the UFRJ, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Tests pointing to this therapeutic activity have been made on mice and rabbits. One of the lines of research, coordinated by scientist Paulo Mourão, involves the study of the so-called sulfated polysaccharides found in marine invertebrates. These substances reveal powerful anti-coagulant and antithrombotic effects.
