Unicamp’s Theater Archives

010-011_Estrategias_208-4Daniel BuenoThe archives of the Portuguese journalist and poet João Apolinário (1924-1988), with over 500 theater critic texts, about 1,200 photographs of plays and 250 programs from plays from the 1960s and 1970s were delivered to the Edgard Leuenroth Archive (AEL) at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), which preserves records of Brazil’s numerous social movements. Apolinário wrote and edited the culture section at the São Paulo newspaper Última Hora. During the military regime (1964-1985), he wrote about Brazilian theater and associated with a generation of well-known directors, playwrights and actors, such as Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, José Celso Martinez and Raul Cortez. “This material is an important facet of Brazilian culture and complements the existing collections,” said AEL technical director Elaine Marques Zanatta to Agência FAPESP. The donation was made official in São Paulo on May 15, at the launch of the book A crítica de João Apolinário – Memória do teatro paulista de 1964 a 1971 (The critical works of João Apolinário: memoirs of theater in the city of São Paulo from 1964 to 1971), which includes Apolinário’s theater critic texts.
